POETIC Biology Initiatives

The Clinical Pharmacology Core Facility
Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics

The designated facility for POETIC clinical pharmacology studies is housed within the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Medical Toxicology at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, MO. Led by Kathleen Neville, M.D., this facility is a self-contained clinical research nursing unit with accommodations for both inpatient and outpatient studies. Research will focus on evaluating how children handle new drugs given to them and specifically how those drugs affect tumors. Dr. Neville's team will partner with researchers who study the biology of pediatric cancers.

The new unit will contain all elements of the existing Pediatric Experimental Therapeutics Unit. However, with an approximate 20% increase in space, it will enhance our ability to conduct phase I/II clinical trials by increased capacity for study participants (especially outpatients) and office space for research staff dedicated to the Unit. Of particular note is that this new unit is being constructed using a design plan specifically driven by the primary goal of supporting early phase experimental therapeutic studies.
