UT Health physicians in partnership with UT Health San Antonio Cancer Therapy and Research Center and the University Health System have created a comprehensive pediatric medical center serving South Central Texas. For over thirty years the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology has provided care to infants, children, adolescents and young adults affected by blood and cancer disorders.
Our faculty is involved in all phases of therapeutic trials, symptom management trials, behavioral research and survivorship care research. Research focused on the causes and treatment of childhood cancer as well as research focused on understanding and reducing the impact of cancer treatment on cancer survivors are supported through the Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute and the Institute for Drug Development.
We believe that improvement in cancer survival can only be achieved through research starting from pre-clinical discovery and testing, to all phases and types of clinical trials. We also believe that no patient should be denied access to novel therapies based on socio-economic factors. To this effect, we support a portion of the clinical research infrastructure at four regional pediatric oncology programs in South Texas through the STP-NCORP grant to allow patients to be treated on clinical trials in their community.

Dr. Langevin's strengths as a board-certified pediatric oncologist, a Canadian board-certified adult hematologist, the institutional PI for COG, PI of the South Texas Pediatric NCORP, and institutional PI for POETIC are to identify gaps in clinical cancer research relevant to children, adolescents and young adults. She has been active in POG and COG as study chair for Phase I and II studies and continue to serve on many COG committees. As NCORP PI, she has served on many NCI committees and Task Force groups and is currently serving a 5-year term on the NCI Clinical Trials and Translational Research Advisory Committee (CTAC).
"Innovation, whether a new drug or a new way of delivering old ones, is at the core of what I do... I am a strong advocate of soundly designed clinical trials to advance the science and improve cancer patients’ outcome."
Dr. Shafqat Shah completed her undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University and her Medical Degree at Duke University School of Medicine. She then moved to Texas in the mid 1990's to complete her Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She was promoted to Clinical Professor In Pediatrics in 2023. Since mid 2000’s Dr. Shah has been the Clinical Director of Childhood Cancer Survivorship and Pediatric Neuro-oncology service at UTHealth San Antonio. Dr Shah has also served as Coordinator of Pediatric Tumor Board for over 15 years. In the area of Childhood Cancer Survivorship, Dr. Shah has developed effective models of care for long-term survivors of childhood cancer has been her clinical focus. She has led a multi-disciplinary team of a dedicated pediatric oncology nurse, psychologist and social worker to provide comprehensive services to this population based on evidence-based guidelines. Over 500 patients remain active in survivorship care from all of South Texas including Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and Corpus Christi. Dr. Shah has been very active in engaging families and providing support for them over the trajectory of their survivorship experience. She has recently published on hemostatic paraments in long-term childhood cancer survivors and is currently working on establishing a database of cancer survivors to support future research. In Pediatric Neuro-Oncology, Dr. Shah has published several articles on CNS lymphoma, high-grade glioma and infant medulloblastoma. She has recently focused on the Neurofibromatosis population and organized a team of clinicians including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Psychology and Genetic Counseling that follow over 50 patents. The program has seen steady growth in patients, many of whom have begun targeted therapy for treatment for NF1. Active collaborations with local and national NF groups provide support, treatment, and education for NF families in South Texas. In 2023, Dr. Shah hosted a symposium at GCCRI for Texas NF families and developed a PODCast through UTHealth Department of Pediatrics discussing current issues in NF1 care. Dr. Shah represented our San Antonio NF Program at the National Neurofibromatosis Conference in April 2024. Current plans include applying to be recognized as a member of the National Childrens Tumor Foundation (CTF) NF Program. Working with families facing cancer has always been the primary focus for Dr. Shah. She enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students and sharing her passion for Pediatric Oncology. She was awarded The Presidential Award for Clinical Excellence in 2020 and a Star Educator Award in 2022 at UTHSCSA. As co-PI in the POETIC Consortium, Dr. Shah offers novel therapeutic options to Texas families facing high-risk or relapse of childhood cancer.
